Sea Cliff

Obituary

Sylvester (Les) Hannett of Sea Cliff, East Hampton, and Boynton Beach, Fl. passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8 th . He was 87. Born to Rose and Pat Hannett, he was raised in Glen Cove, where he met and married the love of his life, Jane.

Les was warm and compassionate, humble in nature with "the gift of gab." He just loved telling stories. A well-read history buff, he was also an avid reader, fascinated with suspense and thriller novels.

Gifted creatively in both theatre and in the fine and graphic arts, he poured his artistry into his Plumbing business, engineering every project with an architectural flare. He was a designer who renovated and rebuilt his homes as a hobby. His endearing personality converted many of his beloved clients into lifelong friends.

His fascination with cars as was evidenced in his role as Treasurer and Founding Member of the Glen Cove Road Panthers Club.  He thrived in the comradery and competitiveness among the guys, many of whom he was still connected to.

Les enjoyed travelling and pushing the boundaries of adventure. You could find him on a submarine or on a boat, despite not knowing how to swim. He favored Maine and Nashville and more recently got to explore his Italian roots with a trip to Italy, including its wine region. He so loved his wine.

He gave so much to family and friends during his life. He was the go-to on almost everything for everyone who knew him, and reveled in his role as teacher. He always left you feeling that you were smarter than you really were.

Les is predeceased by his wife Jane. Survivors include Gail, Debbie and Patrick of Glen Cove NY, Deirdre of Long Beach NY, and Linda (Bob Finkel) of Westport CT; his 7 grandchildren Bryan (Abby), Courtney and Shannon Finkel, Patricia, Katrina, Victoria and Alexandra Hannett, and his 2 great-grandchildren Asher and Parker Finkel. He was also predeceased by grand-children Cory Finkel and Diana Chester, and his brother Anthony (Marilyn), in addition to his parents.

Visitation will be held at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home in Glen Cove on Thursday 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM, and Friday 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM.  A Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church in Glen Cove on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
