John "Jon" Stanley Dolecki, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend, passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Englewood, New Jersey, and raised in Fairview, he built a lasting legacy in Glen Cove, New York, where he dedicated his life to education, coaching, and family.
A devoted husband, Jon was married to the love of his life, Irene, for 52 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life. He was a proud father to Justin, Jamie (Gina), and Katherine (Josh), and nothing brought him greater joy than being a grandfather to Rylan. Jon was predeceased by his parents, Joan and John, and his brother, Stephen.
Jon spent 36 years teaching Architectural Drawing, Wood Shop, and Ceramics at Glen Cove High School, shaping generations of students with his wisdom and mentorship. Known simply as "Coach," he led Varsity Baseball and Basketball, but it was on the baseball field that he achieved his most significant accolades. As head coach, Jon led Glen Cove to New York State and Long Island titles in 1986, along with multiple Nassau County and Division championships. He earned 500 career wins and was twice named Nassau County Baseball Coach of the Year, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful coaches in the county. More than victories, Jon valued the relationships he built with his players, mentoring them both on and off the field. His mantra, "Work hard, and it'll pay off," became a guiding principle for all who had the privilege of playing under him.
A standout All-American pitcher at Appalachian State University, Jon's passion for sports extended throughout his life. He was most proud of coaching his son Jamie in baseball, supporting and mentoring him from his earliest years through high school. After retiring from Glen Cove High School, he continued coaching as an assistant baseball coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. He also devoted countless hours to keeping the GCHS baseball field in pristine condition, treating it as a second home.
Jon found happiness in life's simple pleasures—vacations with family, golf trips with friends, morning walks, beach days, and watching his favorite sports teams. A diehard New York Yankees fan, he never missed a game and could often be found listening to it on the radio while working in his yard. He cherished time with his children and turned college visits with his eldest, Justin, into mini-vacations, even squeezing in a Yankees game on one trip to blend his love for baseball with his love for his son. He also profoundly admired legendary coach Bobby Knight, and his love for Indiana basketball became even more special when his daughter Katherine attended and graduated from Indiana University. St. Pete Beach, Florida, was his cherished winter retreat, where he and Irene enjoyed sun-filled escapes.
He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, integrity, and passion that will forever be remembered by his family, friends, former students, and the Glen Cove community. His impact will live on in the lives he touched, the fields he tended, and the lessons he imparted. His spirit will always be felt on the baseball diamond and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
