Obituary

Janet A. Canfield loving wife of Christopher J. Krako. Daughter of the late Thomas Canfield and Esther Canfield (née Javarone), sister of the late Dr. Douglas Canfield.

November 5, 1961- October 2, 2021

Janet was born in upstate Gloversville, NY. and experienced what she described as an idyllic childhood. She relocated to Long Island earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education at C.W. Post College. After working briefly in a parochial school she spent the majority of her teaching career in the Glen Cove School District. She taught at Landing and then Gribbin, spending the last half of her tenure at Finley Middle School, specializing in English Language Arts.

She met her husband Chris and was married at an outdoor ceremony on a perfect summer evening in 1998, an event which would be a prelude to a wonderful 22 year marraige filled with love and adoration.

Ever the ardent dog lover Janet was never truly happy unless she was living under the same roof as two or three retrievers. She also was never able to truly grasp the concept "no dogs allowed in school" often directing her unwitting yet ever obedient husband to sneak them through the back doors and into her classroom. Her children exploded with excitement seeing the dogs and experiencing the love only a Golden Retriever can bestow leaving a lasting impression on so many of her students.

Because Janet was known by her maiden name, and was a minor celebrity in the community, her poor, overshadowed husband was often referred to as "Mr. Canfield". The reality was that he was exceedingly proud to be associated with such an amazing woman.

In 2017 she retired, a position she had begun aspiring to within 6 months of starting her teaching career. She luxuriated in the gifts it bestowed, spending winters in Charleston SC. and summers laying on the beaches of Long Island.

Recognizing him from the aforementioned canine capers at school former students would periodically approach "Mr. Canfield". Invariably, their stories would share a common theme, recounting experiences with her as a teacher which left an indelible impression molding them into the person they had become today. A month prior to her death, one young woman approached him at the dog park and gushed about what a profound effect she had on her and how much she truly admired her. Upon relaying this to Janet, she began to weep but also smiled remarking "thanks, I needed to hear that". Janet began to feel as if she had lost her relevance upon retiring, yet this young woman had illustrated the impact she had made on so many children was further reaching than Janet could have ever contemplated.

Janet was a loyal friend. She valued her family and friends above all else and considered herself so lucky to have such a strong network of caring friends and family. She will be sorely missed by all.

Those who really knew Janet were aware that she had a deep aversion to funerals and wakes. She left strict instructions with her husband informing him that should he orchestrate either, she would come back to haunt him. He deemed this a credible threat so pursuant to her wishes there will be no services. A private function is being arranged for the family.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her honor to the Crohnes & Colitis Foundation: https://p2p.onecause.com/nationaldiy/christopher-krako
