REMEMBRANCE OF JANE MARIE SCHIANO WIGUTOW

Jane Marie Schiano Wigutow, May 20, 1958-May 23, 2022, beloved spouse of 31 years, companion and best friend of Michael Wigutow, caring, loving and creative mother of Sam, Zeke, Gabriel and Shaquille, sister of Peter (and Lisa), Bill (and Jen), and aunt to Chris and Dan. Jane was a woman of uncompromising faith, feeling and intellect, each of which she shared in so many ways. Dr. Mom to her family and others, she cared for us with love, knowledge and wisdom. All the too many doctors involved in her care these last 9 years were genuinely impressed with her medical knowledge; sometimes they assumed at first that she was in the medical field, and one suggested she may want to go into the medical field. Yet her real intellectual gift and strength was in the spoken and written word, befitting an English major.

We had a family saying that "everyone knew Jane is in charge." She planned the family vacations, always finding a nearby religious shrine, or significant site, and was able to visit Fatima in 2018, her most favorite place on the face of the earth. She created junior chef night for the kids, giving them the opportunity to choose and prepare a meal, requiring them to include a vegetable with the choice of protein, starch and dessert. She gave inventive gifts at Christmas and birthdays, such as handwritten coupons entitling the bearer to a meal at a restaurant representing each continent of the world (she found an Australian restaurant in Queens), and to taste the best ice cream establishments on Long Island. Her favorite books were children's books, a love she shared, again and again, with her children. From Bread and Jam for Frances and the other Frances books by Russel Hoban, to Don Freeman's Corduroy , Pet of the Met and Norman the Doorman , to the Madeline books, Cheaper by the Dozen , Little House on the Prairie , James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small , The Phantom Tollbooth and Miss Osborne-the-Mop , to so many others.

She was instrumental in her children's religious upbringing, ensuring that beyond going to Mass we said the Rosary most days, as well as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Angelus, countless novenas, and prayers for those in need, and that Sunday was maintained as the Sabbath. Beyond these outward forms of expression of faith, she did not miss an opportunity to teach us how to live our faith in our daily lives. Especially the last few years, she more and more brought her faith to the greater community, bringing the exact replica of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Long Island, coincidentally at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing her outside churches, hospitals and homes, throughout an extended stay of several months. Next, she was part of a group that started a Holy Face Ministry on Long Island. She was active in the Catholic homeschooling community and shared her faith with so many people she met. Indeed, though her verbal skills were among her strengths, it was perhaps her prayer life where she believed that she was doing the most to benefit others, in health and faith. May she rest in peace and eternal life. My sons and I (Mike) will deeply miss her presence here with us, a presence I so wanted to share to a happy old age.
