Obituary

Sutherland, Helen I.
(April 24, 1927 – September 11, 2019

On September 11th, Helen returned to our Lord. Glen Cove was her lifelong home. She peacefully passed in the home of her daughter in Virginia surrounded by loving family. Beloved wife of her true love Charles A. Sutherland. Cherished daughter of the late James and Helen McNally of Glen Cove whom she cared for in their later lives. Dear sister of Margaret Jablonski. Loved by all; especially her son, James Sutherland; daughter, Patricia Pius and son-in-law, Joseph Pius. Helen's lifetime joys included spending time with her deeply loved grandchildren and their families: Kathy and Bryan Kline with daughters Tatem and Addison; Michael and Marie Pius with sons Noah and Patrick. Over the past 40 years she was able to spend quality time loving her grand and great grandkids, watching them grow. Helen received her Registered Nursing Degree from St. Catherine's School of Nursing, Brooklyn, NY. She practiced the art of nursing for over 42 years. She was dedicated to the patients and staff at Glen Cove Community Hospital. Upon retirement, Helen joined friends as an active volunteer at St. Patrick's Thrift Shop. She joined Charlie as member of the weekly parish Money Counters. Her devotion to St. Patrick's and her strong faith were exemplified by ministering the Eucharist at the local nursing homes. Helen was an active member of The Catholic Daughters of America. During these times of service she truly valued the lifelong friendships that she formed. Going out to lunch or dinner with friends was a highlight to her days. Helen spent her life loving deeply and gently caring for family, friends, and her community. Helen brought the gift of kindness, a healing touch and the comfort of God's love to all. We will miss her deeply. Visitation Monday, September 16, 3-5pm and 7-9 pm at McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home 220 Glen Street, Glen Cove. Mass Tuesday at 10 am at St Patrick's Church in Glen Cove.  Interment at Locust Valley Cemetery.
