Gloria Marie Malloy of Glen Cove, passed away peacefully at St Joseph's Home for the Aged, Huntington on July 21, 2021. Born Gloria Lotta Marie Faticone in Port Washington, she married Edward V. Malloy of Roslyn on October 21, 1950. Together they had eight children between 1952 and 1969. Gloria was best known and respected for raising a large strong family with relative ease. She exuded a confidence in everything she did and passed that along to her children.
Gloria grew up on Avenue A in Port Washington on the border of Sands Point in a neighborhood with predominantly Italian and Polish families, many of whom were first generation immigrants. Her home was shared with her grandfather, parents, brother and sister, a cousin and occasional borders. Gloria learned that a strong family gives you the foundation to accomplish anything in life and she carried that into her motherhood. She was proud of her Italian heritage and the diversity of her surroundings.
Gloria went to Port Washington public schools and graduated from Sands Point High School. Her neighborhood was the center of her early athletic interests playing baseball, football and basketball in the streets with the boys while holding her own. She later went on to play post high school basketball and softball. At two years old her famously curly hair drew her mom to enter into a Shirley Temple Look Alike Contest, which she won, but as the story goes was too shy to go on stage to receive her prize. That was the last time she had stage fright.
Gloria loved her husband Ed whom she met at their mutual place of work and was married to for 62 years until his death in 2012. Their lives were dedicated to their children where they took care of every need and gave loving support of every child's unique gifts and personalities. Gloria made every holiday and occasion special, instilling a tradition of always celebrating with family. Her meticulous decorating for holidays and delicious cooking made every occasion memorable. Family vacations meant a packed station wagon and later pulling a camper for trips to Maine and Upstate New York. Gloria prepared everything and taught the older children how to pull their weight in a big family.
After raising her big family, Gloria decided to go into the workplace and took a position in the Glen Cove Middle School where she worked in the library, and later at the High School medical office. Her skill of handling a brood of kids prepared her well for school life and she was a favorite of teachers and students alike. She retired after 20 years of service to the school system.
Gloria's strong Catholic faith was at the center of her life. After settling in Glen Cove, Ed and Gloria became very involved in St. Patrick's Parish. All of their children attended St. Patrick's School grades 1-8. Gloria and Ed believed strongly in supporting the church in every way they could and served on numerous committees for over 50 years helping raise important revenues for the church. They saw their time and commitment as an extension of their faith and a duty to give back to the church for all of the blessings in their lives.
A natural leader, Gloria easily took on responsibility. She displayed her organizational skills through her work for the church as chairwoman for the annual Country Fair, parish bingo, and her work on the Booster Club and Annual Bishop's Appeal. She was a member of the Mothers Club, Parish Council, Eucharistic Adoration, the Women's Club of Glen Cove, and served as Vice-Regent of the Catholic Daughters. In 1999 Gloria and Ed were honored by St. Patrick's for their 40 years of service to the church. They also received the Diocese of Rockville Centre St. Agnes Award. During her active years with the church, Gloria was revered for her vision and willingness to serve. Few took on as much as she did.
Gloria loved days at the beach, family outings, travel to see her children and grandchildren or just sitting on the patio in the backyard. She was a legendary shopper always seeking the right price for her family's needs. She had good friends, five daughters, three sons and twenty grandchildren to fill her life. Everyone marveled at her energy, confidence and youthful beauty. She loved to laugh, sing and dance.
Her later years were spent at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in Huntington under the wonderful and nourishing care of the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict. It was her great fortune to have spent her last years there. She was eternally grateful for their care and attention.
Gloria was predeceased by her husband Edward V. Malloy (2012), her daughter Colleen Patricia Keefe (2014), grandson Justin Edward Malloy (2019), mother Florence Faticone (1976) father Armonto Faticone (1959). She is survived by her brother Thomas Faticone (Barbara) and sister Olga Guyer, children Edward (Vicki), Sharon Trieste (David), Beverly Guida (Robert), June Curiano (Robert), Kenneth (Jessica), Yvonne Dux (Tyrone), Russell (Mily) grandchildren, Kelly, Michael, Sophie, Chris, Connor, Gregory, Rachel, Douglas, Jason, Andrew, Shea, Finnegan, Ronan, Meara, Cameron, Bianca, Allegra, Eduardo and Christian.
