Locust Valley

Obituary

Elsie Elizabeth Armstrong, a life long resident of Glen Cove and Locust Valley passed away on April 6 at the age of 94. Elsie was the daughter of Nils and Agnes Swenson and beloved wife of the late Francis Armstrong. Together they managed Armstrong Dairy where for 35 years they put milk on the doorsteps of homes from Glen Head to Syosset. She was the mother of John and wife Julie Armstrong of Sharon, MA, Jane and husband Rick Hamilton of Milton, VT, Jim and wife Jane Armstrong and Jeff Armstrong of Locust Valley. She was also the cherished Nana to grandchildren Katie and Sarah Hamilton and Blake, Lindsay, Jason, Tonya, Rebecca, Jessica and Hjordis Armstrong as well as Beståmor ("best mother") to great granddaughters Nora Ruth Hamilton Johnston and Eva Jane Braun. She will be especially missed by her sister-in-law Teresa Swenson, the wife of her late brother Nils, as well as by her many nieces and nephews in the Armstrong and Swenson families. She will continue to be held close by her goddaughter Barbara (Armstrong) Viglione who will miss their regular Sunday conversations.

Elsie was an avid gardener whose plantings brought beauty and peace to their homes at the Dairy and Tower Road in Glen Cove. For the thirty years of family reunions, she played a regular part in the hijinks. She enjoyed cooking and baking for friends and family alike. There was always a marble cake ready for visitors, pound cakes at Christmas, and her chicken wings at gatherings. She passed these skills on to her family along with her gift of greeting everyone she met with a smile.

Elsie was a life long member and active supporter of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Glen Cove where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and for many years led women's bible study.

Lifelong friends Norma Harvey, Archie Anderson, and George Meyer will dearly miss her as will her many friends from Trinity and bible study.

The family would like to offer special thanks to those people who provided care for Elsie: to granddaughter Katie and partner Anthony Izzo for the constant love, support and the companionship they shared with her over the past several years; to her nurses Kathleen and Dorothy for the loving care they provided Elsie to ease her journey; and to Ramon of Hospice of New York for the gentle guidance he provided the family during this time.

A memorial service for Elsie will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 74 Forest Ave, Glen Cove at 11:00am on Saturday, April 23. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to Hospice of New York ( https://www.mjhsfoundation.org/donate/ ).
