It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of beloved father and husband, Edwin John Anderson of Glen Cove.
He was an outdoorsman and sportsman who passed unexpectedly doing what he loved while hunting in the Adirondacks.
Born April 13th, 1959 to parents Edwin and Christine Anderson of Syosset NY, Ed was the youngest of four siblings.
He graduated St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay in the Class of 1977 where he met his future wife, Anna. The two remained in Glen Cove raising their two boys.
Working at a local sport shop, Ed honed his skills as a gunsmith and a knife maker on and off the clock. Even while founding Anderson Cutlery - featuring highly sought-after knives of his own design and impeccable quality- he spent long hours teaching shotgun shooting at various private clubs such as Piping Rock and Peconic River Sportsman's Club.
When he was not coaching or producing knives, he traveled the country competing in sporting clays and skeet tournaments, which contributed to his rise as a masterclass shooter and renowned athlete in the shooting community.
A true craftsman, his talents were recognized by the oldest firearms manufacturing company in the world - Beretta. Hired as a master gunsmith, the last in Manhattan and one of the last in the country, Ed called Beretta USA on Madison Avenue his home for 23 years.
At Beretta, his acclaim only grew, earning him features in the New York Times, Hook & Barrel magazine, Garden & Gun, New York Press, and many more. Sponsored by Beretta, he continued to accumulate accolades in competition shooting across the country. By far his favorite shoots were those benefiting charities serving veterans, children and cancer survivors.
However, his reputation was not only that of a skilled craftsman and a technical artist, but as someone who always served others with his full attention and a smile on his face.
When Ed wasn't selling luxury shotguns, creating custom parts for his clients from scratch, or coaching his many mentees, he was sure to be found in nature. The only things more satisfying to him than the shooting world were the serene landscapes of the Adirondack mountains, rolling hills of Tennessee, and the open skies of Montana.
A lover of nature first and a hunter second, Ed found peace wading through brush deep off-trail, exploring desolate expanses, and sleeping under the stars- passions he eagerly imparted to his sons.
Though is life was filled with many people and passions, his family meant more to him than anything else in the world, a sentiment he shared with all who would listen. Ed was known to all for his great kindness and his integrity as a loyal friend who would not hesitate to go above and beyond for anyone he met. To strangers, friends, or family alike, Ed was a helping hand, a guiding voice, and a source of endless knowledge and humor.
His family and friends will miss his comforting smile, his sage advice, and his independent, adventurous spirit.
His is survived by the love of his life, Anna, his two sons, Edwin and George, their wives Allison Barkley and Caitlin Petruccio, and his grandchildren, Ingram, Ollis, Lyra, and Malcolm. He is also survived and deeply missed by his sisters Phyllis Walsh (Dennis), Beth Beecher (Alan), Christine Lynch, five nieces and two nephews.
Mass on Saturday October 14, 11 am at the Church of St. Patrick in Glen Cove.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the Adirondack Mountain Club: https://adk.org/donate-now/
