Obituary

Edward "Eddie" Noel Doohan of Indian Land, S.C. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on December 13, 2025, a day shy of his 88th birthday.  Born in Ireland in Drumnatinney, Falcarragh, County Donegal to Denis and Bridget Doohan.  Eddie was one of fourteen children.

Eddie was a life-long educator.  He firmly believed that a strong education has the power to transform lives.  This belief led him to support many others in their own educational pursuits.  He started his career at the Meenderry National School in Ireland where he taught children to read and write far beyond the limits placed at the time.  His career spanned more than 30 years beginning in Ireland, then to Brooklyn's PS- 27 Red Hook and then finally to PS-32 in the Bronx where he finished his career as Principal.  His passion was to create opportunities for schoolchildren who had been passed by and to guide them to a place where they could be proud of their own accomplishments.  He also spent years as a parish volunteer teaching CCD at St. Patrick's School in Glen Cove, N.Y. and later St. Matthews, in Waxhaw, N.C.

Eddie met his wife Mary, who he affectionally called his Pearl, at an Irish pub in Manhattan, N.Y.  At the time, she was a resident physician at Glen Cove Community Hospital.  On their very first encounter, Eddie told Mary he would marry her and so they did in August of 1972.  Eddie and Mary married at St. Patrick Church, Glen Cove, N.Y. and were blessed with five children: Thomas, Anne, Denise, Teddy and James.

Eddie was a proud son of Ireland who lived a simple life guided by deep faith and a devotion to family and friends.  He loved his very large family including his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were like family, His passion for teaching went beyond the classroom and onto the soccer fields where he coached each of his children's teams and then later cheered on his grandchildren in their many athletic endeavors.  One of his favorite past times was yardwork and gardening which was rooted in his childhood growing up on a farm.  He loved cheering on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Saturdays, his beloved Donegal Gaelic Football team, and the GAA.  He was a proud member of the Donegal Football Club and part of the 1968 New York Championship team.  He was also a strong supporter of the Donegal Association and St. Vincent's de Paul.  Eddie was also an animal lover and could always be seen "walking" (almost no one could keep up with him) down the road with at least two and most often three of his beloved dogs keeping pace on his daily walks.  His dog Riley will miss him dearly.

Many years of his life were spent in Glen Cove, N.Y. where he was an active parishioner of St. Patrick Church and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  He cherished the annual St. Patrick's Day Dance, the parish fair and the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.  He volunteered in nearly every capacity.  He also loved the town beach and would often take the kids for an evening swim to cool down in the summers.  The beach reminded him of his walks on the Back Strand in Falcarragh which he absolutely cherished.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 53 years; Mary, his sons Thomas (Jill), Teddy, and James (Julia) and his daughters Anne (Marshall) Enos and Denise (Matthew) Tedeschi.  He will be missed by his beloved grandchildren, Jack, Lia, Cecilia, Mac, Abbey, James, Benjamin and Elizabeth.  He will be deeply missed by his sister-in-law Sally (d. Francis) Roff, his sister Kathleen (d Sean) O'Brien, his sister-in-law Sheila Doohan and brothers; Josie (Teresa), Tony (Bridie) and Christy Doohan.  Eddie is preceded in death by his parents; Denis and Bridget Doohan, his sisters; Mary Cannon, Margaret Miller, and Bridie Boyle, his brothers; Seamus, Packie, Brian, Alfie, John and Danny.  He is also pre-deceased by brothers and sisters-in-law who were always very dear to him.

A Celebration of Eddie's life will take place at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home located at 220 Glen Street, Glen Cove, N.Y. on Friday, December 19th from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10am, Saturday, December 20th at St. Patrick Church located at 235 Glen Street, Glen Cove, N.Y.  Interment will follow at Locust Valley Cemetery located at 117 Ryefield Road, Locust Valley, N.Y.
