Obituary

Dorothy Ann Meier

March 31, 1939 - February 20, 2025

Dorothy Ann Meier, mom, grandmother, teacher, and friend passed on February 20, 2025 at 85 years young. Born and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, Dorothy went on to thrive in Flushing, Queens and recently in Locust Valley, Long Island. Dorothy's reach, however, spread like a sunburst throughout the region through her students and family's successes in their pursuits and as good people.

A loving wife to Fred Meier for 65 years, they built a large and close-knit family together. Dorothy and Fred brought seven great humans into the world (Cathleen, MaryEllen, Patricia, Dan, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Jennifer) who have in turn created seventeen unique and loving grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Matthew, as well as her brother Matthew.

Dorothy taught Pre-K to countless lucky students for over 20 years at St. Kevin's School in Flushing. Shaping their early development into strong students and moral children was her goal. Mrs. Meier was known throughout the neighborhood as a loving and skilled teacher for every child she encountered. Throughout, Dorothy was forging her own class of charges with Fred at home. Her children were benefiting by not only having the best mom, but a built-in teacher as well. This task of raising children would continue to flourish as her slew of grandchildren began and grew even larger after her retirement from teaching. Dorothy would always be synonymous with guiding and caring for young people throughout her life.

Dorothy was able to seek joy in many different ways. Teaching and fostering family strength were her primary focus. Yet, these pastimes were also accompanied by interests in sewing, ceramics, and gardening. Enjoying tea and cookies, along with the occasional Yoo Hoo beverage were popular. While Dorothy's love for Queens was legendary, a later in life move to Locust Valley truly allowed her green thumb to be exhibited further. With her children, their spouses, and grandchildren all buzzing around her, Dorothy's days were always filled with humor and love.

Famous people leave behind popular movies, books, and actions that are remembered. When we reminisce about Dorothy's time here we will catch sight of the more everyday and yet priceless virtues of kindness, humor, and love. Let's hope we can continue to carry on as great a life as Dorothy lived and shared!
